Contents page house styles
As you can see on contents pages lots of images are used, both of the feature artist themselves and of other artists, this is to show the audience I wide variety of whats going to be in the magazine. There is also text on the page showing whats in the magazine and what page it is going to be on, this is to give the audience information on where certain pages in the magazine are. They also usually have a picture of the front cover on the contents page. They also usually have a comment about subscription, and this is to show the audience that they can get weekly/monthly subscriptions of this magazine.
Double page spread house styles
In each of these three magazine issues, the picture of the artist takes up at least one A4 size photograph but mostly a full A3 size photograph. This is because they are the main feature in this issue therefore they want to make them stand out.
A dropped cap is also used quite often, this is shown in the top left and top right magazine issues.
There is also usually quotes from the artists or text bout them, or an interview, this is because the reader wants to find out about the artist.
Colour scheme ideas, Name ideas and feature story ideas
Mise-en-scene location and prop ideas
One location I would like to shoot some of my images is against a white wall/ in a studio and this is because lots of magazines use this and I think they make the photograph look very professional.
Another location will be outside against a flowery background as I think this links well the the indie genre.
I think these location ideas will appeal to my audience because based on my survey, the results show that the most favoured artist was Lana Del Rey and a lot of her images are very summary and include flowers either in the background or as a prop, which is why I am going to try and include flowers in my props as well.
Another prop I would like to use is a guitar as this is highly associated with the indie genre and I think it will work really well on my double page spread and contents page, however I don't think I would use it on my front cover as I want the actual artist to be the main focus.

Social class & demographic of my product
I will be aiming my magazine at working class people as from my target audience, it seems that they are dominantly of a young age therefore are likely to not have a big career as of yet.
The price of my magazine will be £2.99 and i have chosen this based on my questionnaire and what i think would be most appropriate.
My social class would prefer free gifts such as a free CD or a money off voucher.

My reader profile
These are the questions that I asked within my survey. I choose they questions as I think they are appropriate for creating a reader profile with the results and also to find out what the readers would like best within the magazine.
As Lana Del Ray was the most popular choice in my questionnaire results, i decided to research her so that i could understand more things about her such as her style
The results for my survey are as follows:
This shows that most people are aged between 15 and 19, therefore I will use this as a guide to how my music magazine will be designed. |
The dominant gender is female, which means I will construct my magazine to suit them. |
This shows that 50% of people asked have an income of below £25,000. This will help me when forming my magazine as it implies they are unlikely to have a lot of disposable income to spend. |
The results of this questionnaire show that most of the readers don't often to go live music events however 9 of the 24 asked attend them more than 3 times, which even though it isn't the most dominant however, there is still a fair amount of people that attend more than 3 times a year. |
The results for this question show 4 out of the 20 that answered rally like Lana del ray. As she was the most popular it is likely that I will use someone based around her rather than a band like two door cinema club as that only got one vote. This shows that Eminem and The 1975 both got 2 votes and as did the Arctic Monkeys. Every other band/artist only got one. |
This shows that my audiences most favourite gift would be a money off voucher and the least favourite would be a fashion accessory, beauty product or perfume/ aftershave samples. This will help me when putting my magazine together as I will only use free gifts which i think will best persuade my audience to buy my magazines. Therefore, this means I am unlikely to offer a fashion accessory as i know this is the least likely gift to persuade people. |
This shows that 92% of people asked consume music via their phone. Therefore, to make my magazine successful i will have to incorporate this into my magazine. |
This shows that my audience rarely spend a lot of money on music, with 71% only spending betwen £0 and £10 and the rest(29%) still only spending between £11 and £20. |
This suggests that the majority of people (46%) are willing to spend up to £2.49. and only 4% are willing to spend up to £4.49, therefore I will take this into account when choosing the price of my music magazine. |
My survey results suggest that 50% of people only spend £50, on average, a year on music concerts and only 22% of people spending more than £121. |
My Reader Profile |
This mood board shows photo shoots that she has done, magazines she features in and some of her album covers also. I did this as it will help me with the location of my photographs and the presence i want my model to be in. |
This mood board is too show her everyday style, i did this as it will help me decide how to style my model. |
Reader profile research
In a reader profile, they look at what type of people read their magazines, such as whether they are dominantly male or female, and this is so they know how to produce their magazines, this is also the reason they look at their ages. The purpose of a reader profile is purely so they can evaluate what their readers like so that they can produce something they know their readers will enjoy reading.
Demographic Table |
Demographic information
Demographic information is hard data and is not questionable these include age, gender, income and location. From the Demographic table E refers to retired people, pensioners and students. It is dominantly Unemployed people who are unable to spend a lot on magazine subscriptions. Examples of occupations in D is a cleaner or a building site worker. and C2 is someone that works on a building site but is actually a brick layer or plumbers etc. C1 could include a receptionist, they are likely to have a fair amount of money but not massive amounts. B includes: nurses, social workers and teachers, There occupations include making decisions independently. Finally, A refers to people who have disposable income such as civil engineers, architects and lawyers, therefore producers like yo target them as they have money that they can afford to spend on magazine subscriptions.
Psychographic information
Psychographic information is purely opinion based and this is gathered through questionnaires. Some questions could include; What genre of music do you like? What bands and artists do you like? How much money do you spend on music concerts a year? What's your favourite bands? How do you consume music? How often do you listen to music per week? What devices do you use to listen to music?

Summary of conventions
One convention of a magazine is bright bold colours so that your magazine stand out well.
Another convention is for the feature artist to do an interview, this is because the readers want to find out about the artists. Another convention is to have lots of photographs of the feature artist and also have some photographs of the artists in the cover stories.
